So the first step (after riding it around the yard until I giggled) was to begin the process of tear down. I wanted to take everything apart, not only to get to the bits that needed to change but also to find out what needs replacing on this 30+ year old 3 wheeler. I also want to scrub all the parts so I am working with a clean machine during the build.
This machine had received the kind of treatment you would expect for an old 3 wheeler. There was plenty of rounded off nuts and cobbled together pieces and other assorted oddities that had to go. When I was a kid, I owned a few different motorcycles. They did NOT get the respect they deserved from me and things often broke. Since getting parts required not only money, but for my parents to take me 1/2 hour away to the parts store, things were often fixed in a rather creative manner without the correct parts. If a hose clamp would do, then the parts could wait. This three wheeler had been owned by folks with the same approach. For this project I need to balance the cost of new parts with my desire to keep the entire project simple and cheap.
With help from my garage cat watching carefully from my helmet bag, I started taking stuff apart.
